I believe that understanding and resolving complex socio-environmental problems requires an understanding of human social organization, cultural beliefs, as well as economic and political structures. My teaching focuses on training students to use social science theories and tools to improve their understanding of environmental problems. I see myself as a facilitator, to provide empirical background and scholarly training to help moderate debates between competing explanations of socio-environmental problems and visions of desirable futures.
